Visions for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022-2032
Introduction
This year, the Colorado Environmental Law Journal decided to publish a collection of essays and transcribed talks from the 54th Algonquin Language Conference on Indigenous language reclamation and revitalization. This issue: Visions for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022-2032 is in honor of the United Nations International Decade of the Indigenous Language, which spans from 2022- 2032.
While the subject matter of this issue is atypical for the Colorado Environmental Law Journal, the Editors felt compelled to provide a venue for these pieces. Environmental issues like climate change disproportionately impact Indigenous peoples worldwide and many Journal articles past and future address Indigenous resilience and solutions to environmental problems. Thus, when Professor Kristen Carpenter approached the Journal leadership to publish these materials the logical choice was to say yes.
We hope this issue spurs conversations around Indigenous language revitalization, and what the United States can do to support Indigenous people in their efforts to reclaim their languages.
